Wheels rotate smoothly and seamlessly thanks to bearings. The wheel bearings of heavy-duty trucks require regular disassembly, cleaning and regreasing, while maintenance for passenger car wheel bearings is almost unheard of in daily use.

Why Are Passenger Car Wheel Bearings Maintenance-Free?
This can be explained from the following three key aspects:
1. Low Load Capacity
The image below shows overloaded 100-ton trucks seized for violations, each carrying more than 100 tons of ore. These vehicles are equipped with a total of 16 wheel bearings. Excluding the vehicle’s own weight, the 100 tons of ore alone imposes an average load of 6.25 tons on each bearing.

Despite this heavy load, the bearings used in these trucks are not as large as one might imagine, as shown in the following image. Due to the extremely high load capacity requirements, these truck bearings necessitate regular maintenance and lubrication.

In contrast, passenger car wheel bearings are not significantly smaller than those of 100-ton trucks, but they bear far less load. For a passenger car with a curb weight of 1.6 tons, each wheel bearing only supports approximately 400 kg (800 jin). Each wheel bearing contains two rows of balls, and about 10 balls are under load during driving, meaning each ball bears an average of 40 kg (80 jin). This load is negligible for bearing steel with high wear resistance and hardness.

2. Low Rotational Speed
The maximum speed limit on expressways is 120 km/h. Assuming a wheel diameter of 65 cm, the wheel rotational speed at 120 km/h is only about 979 rpm (revolutions per minute), which is slightly higher than the engine idle speed. Lower rotational speeds translate to lower working stress on the bearings.

3. Reasonable Structure with Pre-filled Lubricant
Wheel bearings feature two rows of balls, which can withstand both radial forces (from the vehicle’s own weight) and lateral forces (from turning and driving on slopes). Structurally, this design is extremely robust, allowing the bearings to operate reliably under all driving conditions.

Moreover, the bearings are pre-filled with grease for lubrication and sealed with dust-proof oil seals on the outside. These oil seals not only block dust and debris but also retain the grease inside the bearing. Combined with the relatively low operating load, automotive wheel bearings can achieve essentially lifetime maintenance-free performance under normal use.
Critical Note: Wheel Bearings Are Highly Susceptible to Water Damage
Bearing oil seals cannot provide 100% waterproofing. Minor water splashes are repelled by the grease at the seal lip, preventing water from entering the bearing interior. However, prolonged deep wading (when water level exceeds half the wheel height) submerges the bearings continuously. As the bearings rotate, water at the seal lip is easily drawn inside, causing grease emulsification and bearing rust. Once these issues occur, the bearing will fail rapidly.

For front-wheel-drive vehicles, deep wading also submerges the steering ball cages and their dust boots, all of which are at risk of water ingress. Water contamination in these components leads to accelerated wear. Therefore, avoiding deep wading during daily driving can prevent many unnecessary mechanical failures.
