Timing Belts & V-ribbed Belts

Timing belts and V-ribbed belts are two essential power transmission belts widely used in automotive internal combustion engines and industrial machinery, built on completely distinct working principles and serving separate functions.

A timing belt, also called a synchronous belt, operates via meshing transmission with evenly distributed transverse teeth on its inner side, achieving zero slip and highly accurate constant speed ratios. Its primary automotive role is to synchronize the rotation of the crankshaft and camshaft, ensuring the intake and exhaust valves open and close in perfect alignment with piston movement. Reinforced by high-strength glass fiber or aramid cords to resist stretching, it is usually made of HNBR or EPDM rubber, with a wear-resistant nylon fabric layer covering the teeth to reduce noise and extend service life. A sudden timing belt failure can cause catastrophic, irreversible engine damage.

A V-ribbed belt (Poly-V belt) relies on friction transmission through multiple parallel longitudinal V-shaped ribs. It drives peripheral engine accessories such as alternators, air conditioning compressors, power steering pumps and water pumps. Its thin, flexible structure enables compact serpentine layouts wrapping around multiple pulleys, and slight slip under overload can cushion shock and protect downstream components. Most automotive V-ribbed belts adopt EPDM rubber with polyester or glass fiber reinforcement, and are visibly mounted on the exterior of the engine front.
