Most people are probably familiar with the legendary NIVA SK-5 combine harvester, but few know that there was a model designed to replace this outdated grain harvester back in the 1990s. That model was the DON-1200!
This combine was developed based on the DON-1500 grain harvester, which was already in production. However, it differed from it in many respects, the main one being productivity. While the DON-1500 had a grain harvesting capacity of 14 t/h, the DON-1200 had a capacity of just over 11 t/h.
The key differences between this combine and the DON-1500 are as follows:
The width of the threshing drum on this combine is 1,184 mm, with the same diameter as the base model at 800 mm.
The straw walker has been reduced by one section, while the total length of the sections remains the same at 4,100 mm.
The cleaning area on the sieve assembly has correspondingly decreased as well, measuring 1.96 m² for the upper sieve and 1.63 m² for the lower sieve.
The DON-1200 combine was powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged SMD-23 or SMD-24 engine with a rated power of 170 hp. The engine was started by a starter motor.
The combine’s drivetrain was the same as that of the DON-1500, namely a hydrostatic transmission.
The curb weight of the combine with a 6-meter header and a swath former was 11.5 tons, which is approximately 1,300 kg less than the weight of the DON-1500 combine in the same configuration.
